Carambola

Starfruit is also a local fruit that we love very much. Sweet, tangy and very juicy. Great to eat as it is or mixed into a healthy juice. And of course it is also very beautiful with its starlike appearance. If you never tried it, I could try describing the taste as something tart and sour a bit similar to a young granny smith apple, while bearing a sweet juiciness close to the one of a mid summer orange.

Looks yum. Do you have a photo of what the fruit looks like when it is not peeled?

When you get to Hiva OA, you will find some of the largest Star Fruit that you have ever seen growing all over the island.

I highly recommend renting one of the Toyota trucks down near the harbor and driving across to the backside of the island to visit the banana farm and to see the giant tikis.

Also, when you get to Nuka Hiva be sure to visit the Kamuihei site Hatihue Banyon Tree. It is without a doubt, the largest tree on the planet. It is said that there are hundreds of human remains inside the tree.

Also, Daniels Bay hike to the 900ft waterfall. An AMAZING incredible hike no doubt!

There is also an amazing waterfall hike on Fatu Hiva which is probably the most beautiful anchorage on earth...poor anchor holding though so be prepared to get in as near as possible to shore to anchor.

You're gonna love the South Pacific...makes me want to do the trip again just thinking about it. The long crossing is a spiritual experience too, so enjoy the distance for what it is worth.

Oh yeah, and most importantly, be sure to get you Marquesan Tattoo marking your right of passage when you are in Nuka Hiva. The Tattoo artist on the island and his family are wonderful people and he is by far the best Marquesan Tattoo artist. Those who waited till they arrived in Tahiti were disappointed they didn't get the real thing. The tattoo is said to be a gift from the Marqesans and is intended to signify the meaning of your personal journey across the vast water of the planet. It is an age old tradition ever since Captain Cook for sailors to get their tattoo. Many of the women tended to get ankle and foot designs while men often get calf or shoulders.

Sorry for the long message...just don't want you miss anything.
